Who is Hooey Batiks?
I am Jill Miller, an artist living in Urbana, Illinois. Since 1992, I’ve been exhibiting my batiks at art shows and festivals. As a member of the Illinois Artisans Program, I sell my creations at two of the Illinois Artisan shops — located in the Museum Store at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, and the Southern Illinois Artisans Shop at Rend Lake. I work primarily on clothing, but also make pillows, velvet scarves, handbags and lampshades.
I learned how to batik in an art class at the University of Illinois in 1989 and was immediately addicted. Batik is a sloppy, waxy mess and it’s always a pleasant surprise to see the bright, colorful designs that were hiding under layers of wax. I love playing with color combinations, coming up with silly new designs, and just having fun with it all.
Currently www.hooeybatiks.com is strictly informational. Some of my batiks are for sale on-line at Etsy. You can also see some of my designs, color combinations and clothing styles on my own site. If you are curious about the process, click on what is batik. Check out my links page to see some of Hooey’s artist friends (animal friends and artist-friendly friends also included). If you want to see Hooey modeled on real, live people, go to Hooey in action. If you have a favorite picture of your own Hooey in action, please send it on over.
